When Modotti and Vittorio Vidali met Moscow in 1932, Modotti had already been a member of the Communist party for nearly five years. Vidali had been active participant in the fight against facism since he was a teenager in Italy. Although they had known of one another in Mexico, it was not until then that they became a couple, remaining together until her death in 1942.
Vidali was the Commander of the Fifth Regiment of the International Brigade. During the Spanish Civil War, the Regiment under Vidali's leadership played an important part in the opposition to Franco's Nationalist Party. Traveling from Moscow in 1934, Modotti joined Vidali in Spain where she became an active member of the movement. The stamp on the verso of this print refers to Vidali's position as Commander.
