Though born in Graz, Franz Janneck is first mentioned as an artist in documents from Vienna dating from the 1730s. It was in Vienna that he established himself as a painter. His works, always prized for their sparkling tonality and minute attention to detail, were often executed on copper and illustrate conversation scenes and highly populated secular and mythological subjects. The majority of his religious paintings seem to date from the late 1730s and from the 1740s. These include The Deposition of 1747, sold at Christie's, New York, June, 12, 1981, lot 169, and Christ preaching to the Multitude of 1739, sold at Sotheby's, New York, June 11, 1981, lot 98.
