Manuel Rendón's Parisian work of the mid 20s keenly depicts his interest in subtle, soft and lineal compositions of figures. Although he spent time with Amadeo Modigliani and Chaim Soutine and was well aware of their pictorial discourse, Rendón opted for a more intimate view, less involved with the ideas behind modernist quests. The present painting is a beautiful example of this period. The rhythm created by the subtle graduation of color on the painted surface, the use of line to delineate form and to create movement, as well as the intertwining of the figures illustrate the intimate spirituality of the artist.
