Lot Essay

Molina Campos is considered the most popular self-taught artist from Argentina. His depictions of the gaucho customs in his signature caricaturesque style have reached all the corners of the world, including Walt Disney's popular Goofy films. Celeste mi color prejerido! (1955), like most of his work, humurously depicts the life style of rural Argentina as seen by him in his own estancia, Los Estribos. The gaiety of the couple dancing as well as the mispelled title (emulating local phonetics) underlines the authenticity and liveliness of the gaucho traditions.
