Lot Essay

These vases are based on a design by Grard-Jean Galle for a vase exhibited with a surtout-de-table in the 1819 Exhibition de l'Industrie in Paris. Galle's designs were engraved by J.V. de Moleon in his Description des produits de l'industrie franaise depuis leur origine jusqu'a celle de 1819 inclusivement, Paris, 1824 (see H. Ottomeyer/P. Prschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. II, p. 711, fig. 30). Other related vases were sold Christie's London, 26 November 1996, lots 2-3 (13,800 pounds and 11,500 pounds), and in these Rooms, 27 March 1997, lot 10 ($14,950).
