Lot Essay

Compign, known to have signed his works Compignie as in the current examples, is best known for his exquisitely worked roundels with seaport compositions based upon paintings by Joseph Vernet (1714-1789). Another roundel with the same composition as the first example offered here is illustrated in 'Compign: Peintre et Tabletier du Roy, Villla Muse Fragonard', Exhibition Catalogue, June-July 1991, p. 69, no. 11. Two other roundels by Compign are to be offered in these Rooms from the Alexander Collection, 30 April 1999, lot 252.
