These stylish side chairs with their klismos-form backs reflect the taste for antique classical forms in Italy at the end of the 18th century. Designs for similar chairs by the Sienese designer Agostino Fantastici are illustrated in A. Gonzalez-Palacios, Il Tempio del Gusto: La Toscana e l'Italia Settentrionale, Milan, 1986, vol. II, p. 193, fig. 358 and also appear in a Florentine book of designs of 1796-8, illustrated in S. Chiarugi, Botteghe de Mobilieri in Toscana 1780-1900, 1994, fig. 63. A pair of Italian klismos chairs of more accentuated form was sold in these Rooms, 24 September 1997, lot 125 ($21,850).
