Lot Essay

The present ice-cup may be from the Cheremetoff Service, a service similar to that made for Louis, Prince de Rohan at about the same time. Other pieces from this noted service were in the collection of the Earl of Sefton, Croxteth Hall, Liverpool. The ornithological subject is likely taken from George Edwards' A Natural History of Uncommon Birds first published in France as Histoire naturelle des divers oiseaux in 1745 and 1748.
