Lot Essay

Designed in the 'antique' manner popularized by Messrs. Percier and Fontaine in their Recueil des Dcorations Intrieures of 1801, these candelabra are close in character to the oeuvre of the bronzier Claude Galle. A pair of candelabra of almost identical model, but with further foliate arabesques flanking the central shaft, was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 21 October, 1997, lot 318 ($41,400).
