The source for the design of this brle-parfum or cassolette, now lacking its pierced cover, is based on an engraved model by Jean Brain published in Paris circa 1700 (illustrated in French Decorative Arts during the reign of Louis XIV 1654-1715, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1989. p. 52).
