A SPANISH BAROQUE IVORY, TORTOISESHELL, EBONY AND WALNUT CABINET-ON- STAND**
Late 17th Century, the stand reconstructed
The canted hinged top enclosing a shallow compartment above three frieze drawers with panels of facing lions within applied floral clasp surrounds over a central door applied with an architectural facade with an armorial panel depicting the arms of the 8th Duke of Sessa, flanked by spirally-turned columns and broken pediment enclosing four panelled drawers, flanked by four pairs of drawers, above another drawer depicting various figural scenes and landscapes in tortoiseshell against an engraved ivory background, the stand with three similarly-panelled frieze drawers, the sides inlaid with lozenges, on rope-twisted legs headed by leaf collars joined by similar stretchers, on tapering feet, the base reconstructed from earlier elements

Lot Essay

The arms are those of the 'Gran Capitan Don Gonzalo Fernndez of Cordoba' for Don Francisco Fernndez of Cordoba Floch de Cardona Aragn y Requesens, 8th duke of Sessa, 6th duke of Baena, 10th count of Cabra. Born in Madrid in 1626, he led a successful military career. Appointed great Admiral in Naples he later become Captain of the Spanish fleet for this kingdom. Upon his return to Spain he served as Viceroi and Captain of Catalonia (1669-1673), and moved in the circle of King Charles II. He married four times leaving a descendence of 7 sons and 6 daughters, and died in Madrid in 1688.
This imposing cabinet may have been commissioned on the occasion of one of his many appointments.
