Lot Essay

Pierre-Antoine Bellang, matre in 1788

The EN mark can be identified with the furniture supplied to the Palais de l'Elyse which Napoleon occupied from 1808 to 1815. Though the Palace inventories are too general to identify this bed with certitude, several mahogany beds were listed on the second floor.
Bllang was one of the principal bniste to Napoleon. He also supplied furniture to the Garde-Meuble, and to various foreign dignitaries such as the President of the United States, James Monroe.
A design for a similar bed is illustrated in F. de Salverte, Les Ebnistes du XVIIIime Sicle, 1923, pl. II. Another similar bed was sold in these Rooms, 23 May 1995, lot 131.
