These dishes represent the fashion for antiquarianism in the early 19th century, when many earlier Georgian silver pieces were decorated in the 17th century style. A pair of similarly repouss and gilt dishes made for the Duke of York circa 1810 from dishes hallmarked in 1766 were sold at Christie's, New York, April 14, 1994, lot 389.
