The inscription on the label attached to the backboard (which incorrectly reads Worcester instead of Gloucester) indicates that this and the next lot entered the collection of Henry, 5th Duke of Grafton, in 1844 at the death of his aunt Princess Sophia Mathilda. The Princess inherited the landscapes from her father the Duke of Gloucester, brother of King George III.
The King acquired Consul Joseph Smith's collection in 1762. The collection contained 33 tempera by Marco Ricci, all of the same size, technique and dark support as the present two, A. Scarpa Sonino, Marco Ricci, Milan, 1991, nos. 93-124. These two drawings could possibly have been removed from Consul Smith's collection by the King in order to present them to his brother the Duke of Gloucester.
The Windsor series was executed between 1717 and 1730 following Ricci's return to Venice from England.
