bodycolor on vellum, arched, in an elaborate gilded frame
8.3/8 x 5½ in. (212 x 141 mm.)

Possibly Horace Walpole, Strawberry Hill.

Lot Essay

Probably executed by an artist inspired by the work of Antoine Coypel working at King Louis XIV's Atelier des Velins du Roi in the Invalides, Paris. A work in bodycolor from this studio was sold at Christie's New York, 23 October 1998, lot 18.
The frame bears the Saracen's head crest of the Walpole family in a cartouche below and an Earl's coronet above. This would seem to the ownership oforace Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford. Walpole had lived in Paris and had been lionized in the various literary salons where such works on vellum were often presented as gifts.
