Lot Essay

Related to two drawings of virtually the same composition, one sold at Christie's London, 21 November 1967, lot 134 and the other in the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin, N. Wedde, Isaac de Moucheron, Frankfurt, 1996, nos. D136-7, the second pl. 63. The former shows a goddess instead of a herm and the latter is signed. The Berlin drawing is dated by Nina Wedde to the 1710-20s.
