AN IMPERIAL EDICT
ISSUED BY EMPEROR QIANLONG WITH AN INSCRIPTION CORRESPONDING TO A.D. 1752

The edict is written in Manchu and Chinese on coloured silk with ruyi-cloud pattern-ground brocade, mounted as a handscroll, the Manchu text follows a pair of woven five-clawed dragons and ends with two seal chops of the Emperor, zhigao zhibao, Treasured Imperial Edict, before the remaining half, in Chinese translating the Manchu text (tears to paper mount)

Lot Essay

This Imperial Edict was issued by the Emperor on the twenty-fifth day of the eleventh month, in the 16th year of Qianlong reign (A.D. 1752). The text proclaims the following:

By Imperial Command
This is dedicated to the honour of Zhang Yujie, the chief of military appointments in the Ministry of War. Much honour is given to Zhang Yujie's parents, Zhang Zhihe and Wang Shi, for carrying out their duties and serving as model of virtue and excellence.
