Lot Essay

The present lot is a unique combination of craftsmanship and imagination in utilising an organic material into a decorative scholar's object. Although the carving is late Ming in date, the signature of the famous carver, Feng Xilu was probably an unrelated later addition. Feng was active during the Kangxi reign (1662-1722 A.D.) who served in the Palace; he was well-known for bamboo carvings of immortals and Buddhist figures.
