Each panel of the four sides of the vessel is carved in openwork leiwan-pattern, framed by a key-fret band at the borders, the interior moulded with a crab on a millet spray, the crab is painted for effect whilst the rest of the vessel is enamelled in turquoise, including the square recessed base, bearing the maker's impressed seal mark, Wang Bingrong zuo

The master craftsman, Wang Bingrong, is renowned for his moulded and carved snuff bottles and small scholar's objects. His dates are not precisely known although he is thought to have been active during the Daoguang period (1821-1850) and continued into the second half of the nineteenth century.
