The 1st Garde Grenadiers and the 1st Garde Regiment of Foot (the only German military units to wear the mitre cap) originally both had caps of this pattern, the latter regiment being distinguished by the SEMPER TALIS scroll. In 1894, the 1st Foot Guards were issued with a new pattern mitre-cap with an embossed white metal front plate. Their discarded brass-fronted caps were reissued, with the scrolls removed, to the 1st Garde Grenadiers.
