Private John William Messam, aged 19 years from Swanscombe, Kent was killed in action on 5.9.1914 in H.M.S. Pathfinder, when she was torpedoed by the U.21 off the East Coast of Scotland. Pathfinder was the first warship sunk by a submarine in the Great War. Messam is commemorated on the Chatham Memorial.
