16639 Private William George Smith, who was born in Edmonton, East Reading was killed in action on 20.10.1914 in the first Battle of Ypres and is commemorated on Menin Gate Memorial. Holding a position on the Kruisecke - Ypres - Menin Road crossroads, the Germans attacked the Grenadiers on the afternoon of 20 October and came to within 200 yards of the line before being forced back.
