Lot Essay

Lieutenant Ewan Victor Gell, who was born Douglas, Isle of Man on 7.1.1888, enlisted in the 27th Battalion (Manitoba Regiment) on 1.3.1916. He was reported missing (believed killed) in action on 3.5.1917, probably when Fresnoy was carried by the Canadians during the Allied attack made on a 12 mile front East of Arras. No trace of Lieutenant Gell's body was found and he is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial.
