Private Frederick Borchers was born in Reinsburg, Holstein, where he was a shoemaker by trade. He enlisted at the age of 26 years in 1809 and during his almost six years service he was left wounded at Villa Franca in 1813 and then lost his right arm at Waterloo serving with the 1st Company, 1st Line Battalion.
