Quarter-Master Sergeant Richard Joseph Wright was born at St. John's Middlesex and attested for the Royal Engineers in August 1870, aged 20 years. After 21 years service with the Colours, which included the Zulu War and the Battle of Ulundi in 1879, he was discharged on the termination of his second period of limited engagement in 1891.
