Sold with a quantity of original documentation, including Royal Commission Warrants (3), appointing 'William Coates, Gentleman' as a Lieutenant in the 18th Foot (dated 20.3.1840); another, appointing him as a Lieutenant in the 98th Foot (dated 10.3.1841); another, appointing him to the 'Local Rank of Major in the Army in Turkey while employed in the Turkish Contingent Force' (dated 27.4.1855); a further Warrant, from Henry, Earl of Harwood, appointing 'William Coates, Esq., late Captain 98th Regiment' as 'Captain in the 6th Militia raised in the West Riding of the County of York' (dated 24.10.1854); two damaged but scarce Turkish documents, both in Turkish script (with translations), one dated 1271 A.H. promoting the recipient to the rank of Kaymakam (Lieutenant-Colonel), the other, dated 1383 A.H., awarding the recipient the Order of the Medjidjie Second Degree; and a Royal Military College Examination Certificate, awarded to 'Gentleman Cadet George Coates,' (dated 12.6.1865).
