Sub-Lieutenant Sidney R. Streatfeild was born in 1894 and educated at Rugby prior to being commissioned into the 4th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry in 1912. Subsequently transferred to the 2nd Battalion, he was twice wounded during the course of the Great War and advanced to Captain. Pursuing a political career between the Wars, he was elected Conservative Member for Parliament for Galloway in 1925, in which capacity he served until losing his seat in the General Election of 1929. During the Second World War he served as a Sub-Lieutenant in the "Wavy Navy", the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.
