M.C. London Gazette 1.1.1918.
The Reverend Henry Massingberd Irvin, M.C., was born in July 1882 and educated at Felsted and Keble College, Oxford. Taking Holy Orders, he served as Curate of St. Saviours in Poplar, London between 1906-12, and All Saints in Clifton, Bristol between 1912-19, the latter appointment being interrupted by war service with the Army Chaplains Department. Arriving in France in February 1917, he was wounded on at least one occasion and awarded the M.C., the date privately engraved on the reverse of his Cross suggesting that it stemmed from the German attack on the British lines around St. Julien and Poelcappelle on that day. In post-War years he served as a Chaplain at Christ Church, Oxford between 1922-32 and as Vicar of Old Basing in Hampshire between 1932-52.
