Able Seaman William Thomas Wright was born in Lambeth, Surrey in February 1857 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. Fisgard in April 1873. Advanced to Boy 1st Class in May 1874, to Ordinary Seaman in February 1877 and to Able Seaman in December 1878, he joined the Sailmaker's Crew of H.M.S. Hecla in July 1881. Aboard the latter ship in the Egyptian operations of 1882, and afterwards in the Suakin operations of 1884, Wright was finally pensioned ashore in February 1885.
