Lot Essay

Leading Stoker 1st Class David Edwards was born in Islington, London in September 1864 and entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. Asia in April 1883. Advanced to Leading Stoker in April 1890, he served aboard H.M.S. Swallow in the Witu operations of August 1893 and H.M.S. Barfleur off China in 1900, and was awarded the Naval L.S. and G.C. Medal in May 1896. Latterly appointed a Leading Stoker 1st Class, Edwards was pensioned in May 1903. Briefly recalled at the end of 1914, he did not qualify for any further awards.
