Lot Essay

Private William Jonathan Potter was born in Middlesex in January 1842 and signed on for a 10 year engagement with the Coast Guard in January 1870. Advanced to Commissioned Boatman in August 1875, he served at Stations in Dymchurch, St. Mary's and Hythe, prior to his discharge in January 1880. With an 'Exemplary' character assessment on his Service Record, Potter sometime thereafter joined the Middlesex Volunteer Rifle Corps and was awarded his Volunteer Force Long Service Medal in October 1903.
