Sergeant Henry Tandey, V.C., D.C.M., M.M., was serving in the 5th Battalion, The Duke of Wellington's (West Riding) Regiment at the time of winning his Cross in September 1918. At Marcoing, France, he knocked out an enemy machine-gun post, restored a damaged bridge under a 'hail of bullets' and then led a bayonet charge against far superior numbers of the enemy, driving nearly 40 of them into the hands of his Company. His full-size awards were auctioned by Sotheby's in November 1980.
