D.S.M. London Gazette 9.3.1943. Recommendation states 'He has shown marked zeal, ability and devotion to duty as Torpedo Gunner's Mate of H.M. Submarine Ursula and has maintained a high degree of torpedo efficiency. During the patrol an enemy Submarine was almost certainly sunk by torpedo'.

Mention in Despatches London Gazette 20.12.1940 'For courage and resource in successful actions against enemy Submarines'.

Petty Officer Sydney James Clements, D.S.M., was awarded his Mention in Despatches in respect of services in H.M. Submarine Tigris and more especially her destruction of an enemy Submarine and Trawler during patrols carried out in 1940. Sometime thereafter joining H.M. Submarine Ursula, one of the famous 'Fighting Tenth' Flotilla (and later Eighth Flotilla), it is not known whether he was present in her at the time of the Tenth's successful strike against Axis shipping in mid-September 1941, an action which became known as the 'Battle of Bottoms Up' and contributed to the award of Lieutenant-Commander Wanklyn's V.C. What is certain is that Clements had joined her crew by late 1942, his D.S.M. reflecting services during "Operation Torch", when an enemy U-Boat was almost certainly sunk, in addition to other operational activity. Admiralty records cite a Folbot Raid on Laiguela on the coast of Italy in December 1942; the destruction of a Schooner; hits scored on a train at Santa Lorenzo; the bombardment of oil tanks at Oneglia; and the destruction of a 2,000 ton Supply Ship from which prisoners were taken. Sadly Ursula's Mediterranean sojourn was cut short at the turn of the year, when she was rammed by a ship she had targetted off Cape San Vito and compelled to return to the U.K. for repairs.
