D.S.M. London Gazette 5.8.1941. Recommendation states 'For obtaining valuable information from U-110 under conditions of personal danger'.
Telegraphist Alan Osborne Long, D.S.M., was decorated for his part in a remarkable intelligence coup, when the U-110 was captured on 10.5.1941, and a Boarding Party was successful in bringing away an Enigma code machine with related transmitter codes. The U-Boat had been brought to the surface after a devastating depth-charge attack by H.M.S. Aubrietia, but the task of boarding her fell to a party from H.M.S. Bulldog. Once the latter had succeeded in bringing away the vital Enigma equipment, the U-110 was taken in tow by the Bulldog, but unfortunately sank during the course of the following day, en route to Iceland. Telegraphist Long received his D.S.M. from the hands of the King at an Investiture held in December of the same year.
