Lot Essay

Located in the Bresle valley between Normandy and Picardy, the Chteau d'Eu was built in 1578 after the plans of the Leroy brothers of Beauvais. The Chteau was seized during the Revolution and most of its furnishings and paintings were either sold, burned, or mutilated. During the Restoration the Chteau was restituted to the dowager duchesse d'Orleans, daughter of the duc de Penthivre, the future Louis-Philippe. A campaign to restore and refurnish the Chteau was begun in 1821. The mirror offered here was therefore probably supplied during this period.
