Lot Essay

The Parisian couturier Paul Poiret was among de la Fresnaye's earliest admirers, having acquired La partie de cartes in the 1912 Salon d'Automne. In 1913 de la Fresnaye provided two designs for Roman costumes for a soirée which Poiret held in St. Cloud. The archaic stylization of Poiret's features in the present work is perhaps related to that occasion.
