Lit-Cage et Son Paravent

Bed with headboard and movable gates made of African walnut and brass rods. Two compartments in platform at bedside; two tinted swivel mirrors each with offset lithograph printed in colors and signed with initials; tree branch of carved and painted alder wood affixed to footboard; cloth-covered platform; mattress; and bedspread of mink and velvet with a design of bords based on a drawng by the artist. A three-panel screen of oil, wood and offset lithograph collage signed with the artist's initials.

Max Ernst was commissioned in 1974 by Modarco in Geneva to design Lit-Sage et Son Paravent. He based his designs and maquettes on the throne of the aeolian harp. Ninety-nine screens and fifteen beds were produced before the artist died in 1976.
