Lot Essay

De Thou (1553-1617) began to write his history in 1581 after 20 years of prior research. By 1603, he had already written the first 18 books but before the work could be completed the circulation of unauthorised manuscript copies led him to print the first part of his work. Appearing in 1604 in both folio and 2 volumes octavo, this covered the period from 1546 to 1560 and is preceeded by an epistle to Henri IV.
