Lot Essay

Having studied under Fan Chang Tien, the late pioneer artist and influential calligrapher, Chua Ek Kay now specialises in Chinese brush painting. However, while using the traditional Chinese medium of ink and brush on rice paper, Ek Kay's renditions are imbued with a modern and contemporary outlook. His work is not wholly abstract as he sees the importance of drawing from visible reality. Morning view of Mount Annapura is demonstrative of Ek Kay's careful observation of nature. He studies the effect of mountain mists in the morning.

In 1999, Ek Kay's works will be brought to New York for exhibition, together with the works of a number of other Singaporean artists. The appeal of Ek Kay's art is his understanding of traditional methods while responding to contemporaneous sensations, thus creating a new modernity which both Asian and Western audiences will find at once real and exciting.
