Lot Essay
Using the resonating tones of Chinese aesthetics, Henri Chen Kezhan conceptualises a world that is intimate and reflective. The Chinese format that Kezhan discloses includes the medium of Chinese ink and colour on rice paper and the subject-matter of lotus. On the other hand, he plays on contemporary issues and uses modern sensations of artistic license by transforming his imagery into a textural and almost abstract project.
Misty Lotus draws the viewer into natural environs, but simultaneously fragments our vision through the dense layering of colours and shadows. The apparent ambiguity of the painting however is deflected by responding to the Chinese elements found in the work.
