Lot Essay

While studying painting in Italy, aziz was impressed by the three-dimensional effects in Michelangelo's frescoc. Through experimentation, Aziz further developed his unique effect by actually painitng shadows of his figures directly onto the frames. Black backgrounds also serve to further bring forth the figures so that it appears as if they were leaning out of windows or standing in doorways. The warm earth tones and relaxed postures of the figures are typical of Aziz's style.
In the case of the present lot, the subject matter is a direct inference from the much depicted Virgin Mary and Christ particularly in the Italian artists who dobtedlessly left a strong impression on the artist in his sojourn in Italy.
