Lot Essay

Descending in the same family for over seven generations, this high chest may have been made for a member of the Bechtel, Rittenhouse or Alexander families. The current owner's great-great grandfather, Peter Bechtel, Sr. (1766-1838) was a prominent paper mill owner in Germantown, Pennsylvania. His grandson, Theodore Adlolphus Bechtel (b. 1862) married Maude Rahn (1867-1911), a granddaughter of John Alexander (1796-1861) and Mary Rittenhouse (1795-1873).
