Bearing the label of Simon Willard, printed by Isaiah Thomas Jr. in Worcester after 1800, the clock being offered here appears to be unique in the clockmaker's known oeuvre. Willard is known to have experimented with the sale of many types of clocks as his label advertises, many of which have never been correlated with existing time pieces. Others, such as the "sidewalk clock," pictured in the label have been at least partially identified, and are thought to be clever innovations on traditional time pieces (Richard W. Husher and Walter W. Welch, A Study of Simon Willard's Clocks Boston, 1980, p.238-242).
