The etched inscription reads: NEW YORK YACHT CLUB AUGUST 1891 LIRIS 1ST HUNTINGTON TO NEW LONDON 1ST NEW LONDON TO NEWPORT, SQUADRON RUNS

The Liris, designed by the renowned naval architect William Gardner, won two legs of the New York Yacht Club's Annual Cruise from New York to New England for the forty-foot class. It was owned by a syndicate of members from the Sewanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club, including Charles W. Wetmore, Colgate Hoyt and Samuel Mather. J.P. Morgan sailed on the Liris in the 1890 Annual Cruise.
