Modelled looking up with open jaws revealing sharp teeth and a pink tongue, his snout and two knobs at the top of his head glazed peach and his pupils in a glossy black, his fur markings in a deep grisaille tone with a white patch between his eyes and a deep iron-red collar around his neck

Lot Essay

Boar's head soup tureens, magnificent centerpieces for the 18th century dining table, were first made in European faience, after the earlier tradition of presenting diners with the actual animal's head. Few have survived today, and even fewer in sauce tureen form.
