The present plate is from a service commissioned circa 1789 by H.R.H. Prince William Henry (1765-1837), later King William IV. The third son of King George III and Queen Charlotte, he is likely to have ordered it in celebration of the newly acquired titles of Duke of Clarence and St. Andrew bestowed on him that year.
