The present model, copied after lions found on either side of the staircase leading from the Piazza Areceli to the Capitol in Rome, is likely based on a model used to decorate the four corners of the steps of the Casino ar Marino, Clontarf, Dublin designed by Sir William Chambers for the first Earl of Charlemont. See Robin Reilly, Wedgwood, London, 1989, vol. I, fig. 665, p. 464; also Anon. sale; Christie's, London, 17 May 1976, lot 119 for a smaller pair of this model.
