In the Renaissance style, each of baluster form with shell-moulded shoulder and neck, the mouth extending into entwined handles, that for Water with a triton seated on the shoulder, his head coming up between the handles, a tail coiled on each side, his hands holding as if reins the tips of a dolphin's fins, its mask at the shoulder beneath the spout, swags of seaweed draped on each side, the lower portion with siff leaf tips beneath an oak-leaf band, the fluted socle with beaded collar and a wreath of overlapping stiff leaf tips around the circumference, raised on a further square base, the sides with strapwork decoration; that for wine similarly decorated with a satyr, goatmask and swags of fruiting grape vine

Lot Essay

The present models are based on designs of 1778 provided to the factory by John Flaxman and based on designs by the noted French sculptor, Claude-Michel known as Clodion. The ewers were produced into the 20th century in a variety of materials including black basaltes, jasper, caneware and majolica.
