A GEORGE III SOILID MAHOGANY ARMCHAIR
Attributed to William and John Linnell, circa 1765-1770
The arched back with pierced lyre-form splat headed by a shell, the outscrolled arms with ball finials and downcurved arms flanking the serpentine padded saet and fluted seatrail on pinched square tapering fluted legs, the underside inscribed in yellow chalk 68331

Lot Essay

The design of this chair is based on a drawing for a room attributed to John Linnell and reproduced in H.Hayward and P.Kirkham, William and John Linnell, London, 1980, vol.II, p.36, fig.70. This pattern is closely related to two suites supplied by William and John Linnell to Robert Child for Osterley Park, Middlesex in 1768 (illustrated op.cit., pp.38-39, figs. 71 and 72).
