Lot Essay

This table with its animal supports issuing from foliate volutes derives from antique Roman marble prototypes and may compare to the designs of Charles Heathcote Tatham published in his Etchings of Ancient Ornamental Architecture of 1799. A similar design by Tatham is reproduced in P.Ward-Jackson, English Furniture Designs of the Eighteenth Century, London, 1958, pl.361.

An identical table was sold Sotheby's New York, 11 October 1996, lot 212 ($13,800).
